The Department of Defense expanded commissary shopping privileges in the U.S. effective 1 January 2020 as part of the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018, included in the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019. This expansion adds to the existing authorized shopper list here.
Access was expanded to include:
- Veterans with any service-connected disability
- Purple Heart recipients
- Former Prisoners of war, and
- Individuals approved and designated as the primary family caregivers of eligible Veterans under the Department of Veterans Affairs Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers

Veterans Welcome!
- Effective January 1, 2020; The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Veterans Health Identification Card, (VHIC) will be the authorized identification for the latest group to receive commissary privileges. There will be two groups that will be identified by a memorandum provided by the Veterans Administration.
- To obtain a VHIC, current VA policy requires veterans to be enrolled in VA health care. To check VA health enrollment eligibility and to enroll: visit a local VA medical facility: call 1-877-222-VETS (8387), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., Eastern time; or apply online here.
- Caregivers eligible solely under this act will receive a letter from the VA that indicates they are the primary family caregiver for a veteran enrolled in the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.

The Defense Commissary Agency accepts the use of Military Star Cards in all of its stores to offer greater convenience to service members and their families. The Military Star cards have changed, for those that have received new cards that begin 650155, please use the "pay online with credit card" option much like the Discover card option. For those that still have an older version of the Star Card, please use the "pay with Star card" until you receive your replacement card. Thank you!

WIC Women, Infants, Children Program
Effective immediately, WIC (Women, Infants, Children) Program is now being accepted.
Veteran Shopping
On January 1, 2020 all eligible service-connected disabled veterans, Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war, and primary veteran caregivers will be eligible to shop at the commissary. Store brands are a high-quality, low-cost alternative to national brands.
Organic Food Products
You can find organic products throughout the Bridgeport Commissary. They are easily identified on store shelves by the small green signs displaying the organic seal of the United States Department of Agriculture. Find a wide variety of organic items ranging from organic milk, eggs, soups, yogurts, frozen veggies, cereals, frozen pizzas, enchiladas, shampoos, conditioners, and body lotions throughout the store.

The meat department also offers full Cry-O-Vac Primals at cost. We will cut and wrap them to your exact specifications. Meat comes from Fallon two days a week, and in most cases we can have your special order to you the very next day.
