'PRICING PRACTICES' AT THE Lewis Main COMMISSARY:

The Commissary is an Appropriated Funds facility; it is a not-for-profit entity unlike retailers outside the gate or even the Exchange.  Goods are procured and purchased by the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) with DOD Appropriated Funds for resale to patrons.

While our customers can be assured that they are provided with the best overall prices in their shopping trips to our commissaries, when it comes to individual items each retailer may have a different cost from their suppliers. If we find that our cost does not allow us to be priced as competitively as we should be, or provide the savings we are committed to provide, our category teams will work diligently with our suppliers to negotiate the best cost possible. This might include running great promotions with deeply discounted prices. However, from time to time we may need to be priced slightly higher than a commercial store. At DeCA we are committed to provide the best overall savings to our customers that we can!

Patrons purchase products at cost + surcharge. Price changes are processed twice a month, on the 1st and 16th of each month. Surcharge is applied to the total value of each commissary purchase because the Congress has mandated collection of surcharge (currently 5 percent) to pay for commissary construction, equipment and maintenance. All surcharge dollars collected are returned to commissary patrons in the form of continually improved commissary facilities. The amount of surcharge applied to a commissary sale transaction is shown as "SCG" on your sales receipt.

GENERAL PRODUCT AVAILABILITY:

The commissary orders 'high demand' products every day; however, there are many variables that effect their availability, or lack thereof. Some items such as bleach, hand sanitizer and spray disinfectant are subject to the prioritization of our crucial Health Care services. Other items such as toilet paper, water and meat are effected by trending shopping practices such as 'hoarding'.  

Please know that from a product availability standpoint, we’re continuing to work with industry suppliers and are GIVING OUR ALL to accommodate patron shopping needs. We are doing our 'all-consuming' best to keep the shelves stocked. As such, we will not respond to calls & e-mails in regard to 'high demand' stock levels and availability of product inquiries. Product is stocked throughout our hours of operation and as received.

“Even more savings at your commissaries"

DOD’s “Taking Care of Service Members and Families” initiative will allow us to reduce commissary prices at the register about 3-5 percent on most items – particularly on food staples that struggling military families need most such as bread, eggs, milk and more,” said Bill Moore, director and CEO of the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA). “With this boost we can achieve at least 25 percent in overall savings for eligible patrons who shop their commissaries.”

Commissary customers are expected to see price changes at most locations by mid-October.

 “The commissary system’s commitment to saving military communities money has not wavered for over 30 years,” Moore said. “We remain steadfast in our efforts to improve the quality of life of our eligible patrons by saving them at least a quarter on every dollar they spend on groceries compared to ‘outside the gate’ grocery stores. That’s $50 back in your pocket on a $200 grocery bill! “We are a food security resource for our customers, and as such, we are doing everything we can to get our precious military families the products they need – at the lowest price possible.”

 Starting April 6, commissaries will start charging a nominal price for each single-use paper or plastic bag. Cost associated with this change is 5 cents for plastic and 10 cents for paper single-use bags. DeCA encourages patrons to bring their own bags from home or purchase reusable bags from in-store or Commissary CLICK2GO® assortments. The Department of Defense expanded commissary shopping privileges in the U.S. effective 1 January 2020 as part of the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018, included in the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019. This expansion adds to the existing authorized shopper list here.

Access was expanded to include:

• Veterans with any service-connected disability
• Purple Heart recipients
• Former Prisoners of war, and
• Individuals approved and designated as the primary family caregivers of eligible Veterans under the Department of Veterans Affairs Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers

Protective services civilian employees who are in a position of the following series of the General Schedule are able to shop at the commissary in accordance with Title 10 USC 1066, eligibility of Protective Services Civilian Employees.  Only the individual employee may shop not dependents and/or family members.

Your Health and Wellness Dietitian Approved Programs. The Dietitian Approved Thumbs up (DAT) Labels, makes it easy for shoppers to find high-performance, nutrient-dense foods. Look for the DAT "Green Labels with a thumbs up" on shelves throughout the store. Dietitian-approved fueling stations offer nutritious on-the-go meals and snacks. Posters in the center of store highlight affordable and nutritious dietitian-approved quick and easy-to-make meals. There is a "dietitian alongside you" at Your Commissary!

EVEN MORE SAVINGS AT @yourcommissary! DOD invests extra funding in benefit to help reduce prices and help strengthen economic security of military families.

Service members and their families will soon see a 3-5 percent decrease in pricing on most grocery items in their commissaries as part of a Department of Defense (DOD) initiative to bolster the economic security and stability of the military community.

Seafood

The Fort Riley Commissary have a variety of frozen fish and other seafood such as lobster, king crab, green mussels, shrimps and etc. that are readily available for purchase. You can also find some thawed tilapia and salmon by the meat department area.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Starting April 6, commissaries will start charging a nominal price for each single-use paper or plastic bag.  Cost associated with this change is 5 cents for plastic and 10 cents for paper single-use bags.  Patrons submitting Commissary CLICK2GO curbside or delivery orders will be given the option to purchase bags when checking out.  DeCA encourages patrons to bring their own bags from home or purchase reusable bags from in-store.  For more information, visit https://shop.commissaries.com/bags

NOTICE!

DeCA's stateside commissaries are implementing the policy of rounding up or down to the nearest nickel when customers pay in cash.  This is in response to the U.S. Mint ending production of pennies in August 2025.  Patrons may give pennies as part of paying for groceries, but pennies will not be handed back as change.  Patrons may also write a check for the exact amount, as well as complete debit and credit card transactions to the penny.

CALLING ALL EASTER BUNNIES!

The Commissary now has a great selection of Easter goodies, from chocolate bunnies, chocolate eggs, peeps, cookies, jelly beans and lots more!  Come by and pick out your favorites and some for your friends!  

NEW BREADS IN AISLE 5

Check out the new selection of breads available in Aisle 5.  You will find Traditional French Baguettes, 2ct Demi Baguettes, Bolillo Rolls, San Francisco Sourdough, Italian Sourdough, and Sliced Everything Sourdough.  Give them a try and let us know your opinion!

Meal, Ready-to-Eat are available for purchase for those ice fishing derby's, hunting trips or just because you like them days!  Several delicious varieties to choose from!

CHEESE SECTION

Don't forget to check out the specialty cheese found in the Deli Aisle 4.  Items arrive on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  

GRAB 'N GO

In a hurry? Make your lunchtime shopping quick and easy with sandwiches and wraps from our Grab 'n Go section. Specialty sandwiches are available Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  York Street Market Sandwiches are available every day.  Special Calzones, hard-boiled eggs, along with Oh Snap! Pickles and Vegetables are in our Grab 'n Go.  Sushi is in our Grab 'n Go Section on Tuesday and Thursdays only!   Beverages and snacks are nearby too! 

BAKERY

Bakery items are located at the entrance to the Produce Department.  A selection of cookies, cakes, pies and breads arrive on Thursday mornings.  Lots of great products to choose from.  Check out the table at the front of the Produce Department.  You might just find something good to eat! 

SELF-SERVICE BAGGING

Self-service bagging for your shopping convenience is located at both registers 1 and 2.  Just let the Sales Store Checker know that you want to bag your own groceries.

Customers may bring their own reusable shopping bags to the Commissary and the baggers will bag the groceries or you may bag your own groceries.  Just let the cashier know your preference.
