FEDS FEED FAMILIES: Commissaries lead record-breaking DOD donation effort to food banks
The USDA’s annual Feds Feed Families (FFF) campaign, held June 1 through Sept. 31, has ended with 7.8 million pounds of food being donated to food banks across the nation. Feds Feed Families encourages employees from across the federal government to donate to local food banks and pantries. This year marks the third that the Department of Defense (DOD) has designated the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) as its campaign leader.
Low prices on whole frozen turkeys featured in DeCA’s Oct. 24 -Nov. 6 regional Sales Flyers
The Defense Commissary Agency’s (DeCA) Sales Flyer for Oct. 24 – Nov. 6 offers customers even greater ways to save at their commissary. DeCA recently expanded its sales flyer to overseas military families in the European and Pacific regions. Customers can now plan their next shopping trip or Commissary Click2Go order by accessing the sales flyer link and selecting the region of their choice. In this edition, commissaries are promoting significant savings through Thanksgiving on whole frozen turkeys. Customers can get a head start on the holidays or just pregame their turkey favorites at $.68/lb. for select brands. Availability and brands will vary by location.
Dove Dry Shampoo aerosol products recalled
Unilever United States is voluntarily recalling select dry shampoo aerosol products due to potentially elevated levels of benzene, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Oct. 21.
Scented Pine-Sol products recalled
The Clorox Company is voluntarily recalling select scented Pine-Sol products because they may contain bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, according to a recall notice from the Defense Commissary Agency’s food safety office sent Oct. 25.
Lactaid cottage cheese recalled
HP Hood LLC is voluntarily recalling specific containers of their Hood, Lactaid and Penn Maid brand cottage cheese due to the potential presence of foreign material, specifically plastic pieces, according to a recall notice from the Defense Commissary Agency’s food safety office sent Oct. 26.
DeCA’s Blanchard among recipients of SecDef Award for Outstanding Employees, Service Members with Disabilities
Rachel Blanchard, a Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) employee at the Kadena Air Base Commissary in Okinawa, Japan, was honored on Oct. 20 as one of 28 individual recipients of the 2022 Secretary of Defense Awards for Outstanding Department of Defense Employees and Service Members with Disabilities.

Bunch selected executive director of Store Ops
Robert J. Bunch, former director of the Defense Commissary Agency’s (DeCA) Central Area, was named executive director of the Store Operations Group effective Nov. 6. As Store Operations executive director, Bunch directs more than 11,000 employees, and manages and directs tactical store support for DeCA’s nearly 240 commissaries. These stores are configured under five areas divided into 25 field zones in 46 states, 13 countries and two U.S. territories.

As the temperatures and the leaves begin to fall, prices on most grocery items in military commissaries are also dropping just in time for Thanksgiving. The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) is slashing prices on most items to increase overall patron savings to at least 25 percent compared to commercial grocers as part of the Department of Defense initiative to bolster the economic security and stability of the military community.
