1. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MILITARY CHILDREN

 

Applications have now opened for Fisher House Foundation’s Scholarships for Military Children program for academic year 2024 – 2025.  Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping service members, veterans and their families, administers the program.  For scholarship year 2024-25, Fisher House Foundation will award 500 scholarship grants of $2,000 each. The selection process will begin immediately following the application deadline of Feb. 14, at 11:59 p.m. PST.  All rules and requirements for the Scholarships for Military Children program, as well as links to frequently asked questions are available at militaryscholar.org.

San Diego Commissary now has   Feeds Families  bags for sale $15.00 each - The bags that are purchased and donated help local   families in need.  The foodbanks assist local families in need and deliver to needy families and veterans such as the Veterans Village of San Diego, Chula Vista VFW, El Centro VFW, Slab City for Veterans, the USO San Diego, the San Diego Homeless, etc.

Commissary patrons now see a faster path to virtual shopping as the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) announces “shop.commissaries.com,” as its go-to website for access to services like online ordering, payment and pickup. Shop.commissaries.com replaced “commissaries.com” as DeCA’s patron-facing online site, streamlining the customer experience and making it consistent with other grocery retailers.

How do you prepare for the next crisis? Planning is the first step and emergency preparedness officials recommend a disaster supply kit that includes the following items:

 

•           COVID-19 protection – reusable or disposable face coverings, disposable gloves, hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes and hand soap

•           Water – at least one gallon daily, per person (three-day supply for evacuation, two-week supply for home)

•           Nonperishable foods – canned meats, fruits, vegetables, dried fruits, nuts, raisins, cereal, crackers, cookies, energy bars, granola, peanut butter, and foods for infants and the elderly (three-day supply for evacuation, two-week supply for home)

•           Paper goods – writing paper, paper plates, paper towels and toilet paper

•           Writing utensils – pens, pencils (manual pencil sharpeners) and markers

•           Cooking items – pots, pans, baking sheets, cooking utensils, charcoal, a grill and a manual can opener

•           First-aid kit – including bandages, medicines and prescription medications

•           Cleaning materials – bleach, sanitizing spray, and hand and laundry soap

•           Toiletries – personal hygiene items and moist wipes

•           Pet care items – food, water, muzzle, leash, carrier, medications, medical records, and identification and immunization tags

•           Lighting accessories – flashlights, batteries, candles and matches

•           Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)

•           Duct tape and scissors

•           Multipurpose tool

Commissaries, AAFES partner to sell each other’s gift cards

The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) and the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) began selling their respective gift cards in both commissaries and exchanges on June 22. Commissaries will now have reciprocal agreements with AAFES and the Navy Exchange Command (NEXCOM) for gift card sales. DeCA began their partnership with the Navy in May 2018. Both organizations’ gift cards are open value: AAFES cards sold in commissaries are available in denominations from $5 to $1,500, and commissary cards sold in exchanges are available in amounts from $5 to $300. Authorized customers must still redeem the gift cards at their respective store or online.

Gift Cards are available online and at all commissaries worldwide – on a rack at full service, front-end registers.

The Department of Defense expanded commissary shopping privileges in the

U.S. effective 1 January 2020 as part of the Purple Heart and Disabled

Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018, included in the John S. McCain National

Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019.

Access was expanded to include:

- Veterans with any service-connected disability

- Purple Heart recipients

- Former Prisoners of war, and

- Individuals approved and designated as the primary family caregivers of

eligible Veterans under the Department of Veterans Affairs Program of

Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers
