HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Commissaries honor Army’s 248 years of service
The Continental Army was formed on June 14, 1775, by a resolution that was passed by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia after the outbreak of the American Revolution. Gen. George Washington was named the Army’s commanding general. Two days after the service was established, the roots of the commissary benefit were laid down.

Johnsonville recalls pork sausage link due to foreign matter contamination
Johnsonville LLC is recalling 42,062 pounds of ready-to-eat “Beddar with Cheddar” pork sausage links that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically very thin strands of black plastic fibers, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent June 15.

156 YEARS AND COUNTING: Military commissaries evolve to become vital part of DOD’s initiative to improve economic security
When the modern-day commissary benefit began on July 1, 1867, it expanded shopping privileges at commissary subsistence stores to enlisted men. The benefit had previously only been available for officers since 1825.
Fast forward 156 years and the commissary benefit has indeed evolved. What were subsistence stores in abandoned warehouses and horse stables, where the customers had to hand their shopping list to a clerk, have become a modern, fully equipped stores under the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) offering online ordering and pickup with Commissary CLICK2GO.
FEDS FEED FAMILIES KICK OFF: Commissaries lead DOD effort to encourage employees, patrons to participate in donations to food banks, pantries
This year’s Feds Feed Families campaign runs from June 26 through Sept. 29, and is the fourth year the Department of Defense has designated the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) to lead its effort. “We’re excited to launch this year’s campaign,” said Doug Nomura, chief of DeCA’s Logistics and Sustainment Division. “We are fortunate to receive great support across the Department of Defense and from our commissary shoppers.”
