The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) has announced the winners of the FY 2021 Best Commissary Awards. Awards are given in five categories determined by store location and size, and are named in honor of government officials who protected the commissary benefit and championed quality-of-life issues for the military and their families.

When Bill Moore signed on as director and CEO of the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) in 2020, he was given marching orders from the Pentagon to transform the military’s grocery benefit. As Moore prepares to retire March 31 after more than 40 years of government service, he reflected on his efforts to lead the commissaries’ gigantic leap into the future.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 honors Vietnam War era veterans and their families, thanking them for their service and sacrifice during the conflict that lasted more than two decades.

“Commissaries are proud to honor our youngest heroes during April, the Month of the Military Child,” said Marine Sgt. Maj. Michael R. Saucedo, the senior enlisted advisor to the Defense Commissary Agency director. “Whether it’s special drawing contests, other events or exclusive savings on nutritious products to help their development, we are here for our military children.”

That outreach includes the millions of disabled veterans, certified caregivers, Purple Heart recipients and former prisoners of war who were granted commissary, exchange and MWR retail shopping privileges on Jan. 1, 2020, under the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018.
