Until 2020, the frequency of family meals prepared at home was on the decline. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, preparing and sharing meals at home snapped back into focus, becoming the norm.

On Oct. 1, 1991, the Defense Commissary Agency officially took over the responsibility of providing the commissary benefit to U.S. military members and their families. As the agency enters its 29th year of managing the military’s commissaries the impact of the benefit cannot be overstated said William F. Moore, DeCA’s new Director and CEO.

The Defense Commissary Agency would like to welcome back military retirees and other eligible beneficiaries, such as disabled veterans and their designated family caregivers, Purple Heart recipients and former prisoners of war to shop their local commissary.

The future is now for young enlisted troops, and the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) wants to ensure they know how to maximize their commissary benefit. In that spirit, DeCA, the Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program partnered June 8-9 to provide hands-on cooking classes, nutrition education and tours of the commissary for local enlisted service members.

The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) announces the selection of Army Col. Aaron M. Stanek, former commandant of the Army Logistics University (ALU), as the headquarters chief of staff effective Aug. 17.

The commissary benefit was an important part of Bill Moore’s life growing up. He is the son of a combat veteran, so he remembers what a trip to the commissary meant to his family’s quality of life. Today, as the director and CEO of the Defense Commissary Agency, Moore is celebrating the 154th birthday of the commissary benefit on July 1 by boosting its future usage.

Army Lt. Col. Angela M. Schmillen is the Defense Commissary Agency’s new director of public health and safety, announced Rogers E. Campbell, executive director of DeCA’s Store Operations Group. Schmillen’s selection is effective July 1.
