Earth Day, April 22, may be celebrated once a year, but the Defense Commissary Agency’s efforts to employ sustainable work practices and recycle and divert waste from landfills is a year-round job.

Folks can tell military members and their families “thank you for your service,” but commissaries are showing it every day through significant savings, especially in May during Military Appreciation Month.

As the rate of food bank usage has increased in recent years so has the military commissaries’ support of these institutions. Over a six-year period, the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) has donated more than 21 million pounds of edible but unsellable food to local food banks – most recently 4.1 million pounds in 2020.

Our pets are beloved family members, exercise partners and stress relievers. During the pandemic, they have made the lockdown much more bearable. During National Pet Month in May, commissaries worldwide give customers ways to show their furry, four-legged friends some love while saving big on all their pet needs.

Teamwork and a talent for making impressive in-store displays of fruits and vegetables helped assure the selection of West Point Commissary’s Maria Broda as one of the top 25 retail produce managers of the year for 2021.

As commissary customers head to their grills in May during National Barbecue Month, the Defense Commissary Agency offers significant savings on their meats, sauces, condiments, side dishes, aluminum foil and pans, charcoal briquettes and more.

From April through Oct. 31, the Defense Commissary Agency’s severe weather promotional package includes discounts on the following items: beef jerky and other assorted meat snacks, soup and chili mixes, canned goods, powdered milk, cereals, batteries, airtight bags, weather-ready flashlights, tape (all-weather, heavy-duty shipping and duct), first aid kits, lighters, matches, lanterns, candles, hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes. Specific items may vary from store to store.

As America remembers the sacrifices of fallen service members during Memorial Day, the Defense Commissary Agency is taking this time to redouble its efforts in serving the military, the agency director said. “Memorial Day reminds us that we can never forget the sacrifices of our military members who paid the ultimate price in service of our country,” said Bill Moore, DeCA director and CEO. “On this day, we rededicate our efforts to be THE grocery provider of choice for our eligible patrons – delivering a vital benefit exclusively for our military community and their families.”

Throughout the month of June, the commissary will run a number of sales promotions to help customers save more as they observe the Army’s 246th birthday, Flag Day and Father’s Day.

Now featuring online payment and more product information than ever before, the online ordering/curbside delivery service is being expanded to all stateside commissaries by the end of the year, and to overseas stores soon thereafter.
