Boar’s Head Romano cheese products recalled for potential presence of Listeria
Boar’s Head Brand’s supplier of pecorino romano cheese, Ambriola Company, has issued a recall for select lots of pecorino romano cheese products, including two products they produce under the Boar’s Head Brand label, due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
Ambriola Company initiated their recall after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I recall for the items due to potential adulteration.
Affected products include:
- Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese, 6 ounces; UPC 0-42421-05858; Sell by dates 11/21/25 – 3/12/26
- Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Cheese, 7 ounces; UPC: 0-42421-15160; Sell by dates: 11/25/25 – 5/11/26
Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The illness caused by these bacteria can take up to 70 days to appear. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.
The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) has publicized this recall to all its stores, according to Richard Stith, supervisory consumer safety officer for DeCA Headquarters and Support Center at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.
